"Remembering Home" December Seniors Count workshop

NASHUA – Do you remember the introduction of Tupperware? Recall gathering around the radio? For some, all it takes is one look at a cast-iron meat grinder, and they can smell their mother’s hamburg cooking. For others, a pair of ice tongs produces visions of the ice delivery man doling out ice chips to neighborhood kids on a summer day.

Join Seniors Count on Monday, December 10, 2014 for a special “Remembering Home” workshop designed to stir up conversations about home, housework, food, entertainment and communication.

Bringing together a collection of 20th Century objects and images that invoke memories of everyday life, the facilitator will provide historical context while inviting participants to share their memories in this friendly workshop environment. The objects are universal because they invoke memories of everyday life – memories we might not even know we have. Some of these memories are preserved at the end of the workshop in personalized “I Am From” poems, a creative writing activity.

“Remembering Home” is presented by Historic New England, the oldest, largest and most comprehensive regional heritage organization in the nation.

The free workshop will be held at the Nashua Senior Activity Center, 70 Temple St. at 1:00pm. Senior Center membership is not required to attend.

Please note that in case of wintery weather, the Senior Activity Center follows the Nashua schools closing schedule. The workshop will be rescheduled if schools are closed or there is a delayed opening on December 8.

Advance registration for the workshop is strongly suggested. Please call Beth Todgham, Seniors Count-Nashua facilitator at (603) 889-3440 x 132 for more information.

Seniors Count-Nashua is a program of Southern New Hampshire Services.

Workshop participants can come early to enjoy lunch offered by St. Joseph Community Services (Meals on Wheels) in the cafeteria at the Nashua Senior Activity Center. A $2 donation is requested for diners age 60 and over; the price is slightly higher for those under 60. Pre-registration for lunch is required. Call Steve, SJCS site manager, at 882-2106 to reserve your lunch. Lunch is served at 11:45am.

The workshop is one of a series of free programs offered monthly at the Senior Activity Center. The workshops provide area residents with information on resources available in the community as they age. Programs are filmed by Nashua’s Education Channel 99 and can be viewed on the station or on-line at http://nashua.ezstream.com.

Additional support for the workshops is provided by Southern New Hampshire Services; ServiceLink Resource Center; the Nashua Public Library; and the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, Bureau of Elderly and Adult Services.
