Donation will help 500 families work toward to breaking generational poverty cycle
Pictured: Hannaford Supermarkets presents matching $25,000 grants to Southern New Hampshire Services and Community Action Program Belknap-Merrimack Counties.
Hannaford Supermarkets has presented Southern New Hampshire Services (SNHS), the community action partnership for Hillsborough and Rockingham Counties, with a donation of $25,000 to support low-income families by working with the entire family unit to address obstacles and challenges that are in the way of breaking the cycle of generational poverty.
“Hannaford Supermarkets has once again shown themselves to be a caring and generous member of our communities. Now more than ever the need to consider the whole family and make efforts to support them in all areas of need at the same time as opposed to trying to tackle one issue at a time, is vital to prevent the family from sliding deeper into uncertainty by lifting them up in all areas, said SNHS Executive Director Donnalee Lozeau. “As Southern New Hampshire Services embarks on a Whole Family Approach these funds will allow us to help families with not only food insecurities, but job security, safe and affordable child care, and housing. We are so grateful to be a partner with Hannaford in putting the “action” in Community Action.”
The Whole Family Approach operates through the lens of social determinants of health, which can have a major impact on the future health and socioeconomic success of children. Examples of the social determinants of health are access to resources to meet daily needs, access to health care services, access to quality education, and access to job opportunities.
With this approach SNHS will engage families in designing the service delivery model, take into consideration the needs of all family members in the delivery of services, reduce obstacles to receiving services, empower families to create their goals which will be achieved with the guidance of a Whole Family Coach, coordinated service delivery with community partner agencies and place emphasis on Workforce Development, Financial Literacy, social determinants of health, and social capital to support long-term economic stability.

We all look forward to a good night’s sleep as it gives our body the chance to restore its energy levels. Adequate sleep is essential to good health and quality of life. That said, why do so many seniors have a hard time getting to sleep…and staying asleep? What affects getting a good night’s sleep and how can a chronic lack of sleep affect your mental and physical health?
Issues related to sleep and aging are the subject for the December 12, 2016 Senior Education Workshop offered by Southern New Hampshire Services at the Nashua Senior Activity Center.
The free workshop will be presented by Stephanie Wolf-Rosenblum, MD, Vice President of Development and External Affairs for Southern New Hampshire Health.
Topics covered in the workshop will include normal sleep patterns, body clocks and changes that occur with aging; the effects of diet, exercise and schedules on the quality sleep; sleep disorders that may interfere with the quality of sleep, such as sleep apnea, restless legs and narcolepsy; causes of insomnia; how acute chronic sleep deprivation can affect your health; and tips for getting the most out of your night’s sleep.
The workshop begins at 1:00pm. The Senior Activity Center is located at 70 Temple St., Nashua.
Advance registration for the workshop is strongly advised. Please call Beth Todgham, Nashua community coordinator for Southern New Hampshire Services at (603) 889-3440 x 132 for more information.
Workshop participants can come early to enjoy lunch offered by St. Joseph Community Services (Meals on Wheels) in the cafeteria at the Nashua Senior Activity Center. A $2 donation is requested for diners age 60 and over; the price is slightly higher for those under 60. Pre-registration for lunch is required. Call Steve, SJCS site manager, at 882-2106 to reserve your lunch. Lunch is served at 11:45am.
Dr. Wolf-Rosenblum held the position of Chief Medical Officer for Southern New Hampshire Medical Center from 2003 - 2015, Medical Director of Foundation Medical Partners from 1996 - 2003, and Chief of Staff from 2001 - 2002. A graduate of Brown University and Yale University School of Medicine, she completed training in internal medicine and a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Yale University School of Medicine. She is board certified in four areas of medicine internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, critical care medicine, and sleep medicine. Dr. Wolf-Rosenblum also holds a master's degree in Medical Management from the Heinz School of Public Policy and Management of Carnegie Mellon University.
The workshop is one of a series of free programs offered monthly by Southern New Hampshire Services. The workshops provide area residents with information on resources available in the community as they age. Past programs have been filmed by Nashua’ Education Channel and broadcast locally on Comcast Channel 99. They can be viewed on-line at http://nashua.ezstream.com.
ServiceLink Resource Center, the Nashua Public Library, and the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services-Bureau of Elderly and Adult Services provide additional support for the workshops.
