Bone Builders
Strengthening seniors one class at a time

bone builders for web
Bone Builders was developed in 1996 by a team of exercise specialist from Tufts University and has been tested and used extensively and successfully by hundreds of older adults ranging from 50 to 90 years of age.

The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends engaging in both weight-bearing exercise (like walking, climbing stairs, dancing and yardwork) and muscle-strengthening exercise to build and maintain bone density. It’s never too late to start a bone-healthy program even if you already have osteoporosis.

You may worry that being active means you’re more likely to fall and break a bone; however, the opposite is true. A properly designed consistant exercise program like Bone Builders will actually help prevent falls and fracture. This is because exercise strengthens bones and muscles and improves balance, coordination and flexibility.

Each class consists of a warm-up, balance work, strength-training and a cool down. The class is offered once or twice per week at locations in the community such as senior centers and senior housing faculties.

The program is led by trained RSVP volunteer leaders. The class is FREE. To join a class participates must obtain clearance from their physician. Thresholds and Decisions Making Program
Standing on the threshold of changing someone’s life

Thresholds is a unique program where volunteers meet with individuals currently involved with the New Hampshire criminal justice system to teach better decision making skills. This critical thinking and decision-making course has a twenty-five year history in the Northeast.

Sessions are led by trained RSVP volunteers and equips participants with critical thinking and decision-making skills so that they can make successful life choices.

Participants are screened for participation in the program by RSVP staff. Each participant attends 12 weekly group sessions taught by Thresholds classroom teachers. Program participants meet one-on-one with their assigned trained volunteer counselor once a week to discuss and reinforce the material discussed in that week’s group session.

Volunteers commit to meeting with program participants for one hour per week for a 12 week session. Training and materials are provided to all volunteers prior to the start of new session. Ongoing training, support, and materials to teach the program are provided to volunteers by RSVP staff.
