“Don’t Let Common Disaster Myths Catch You Unprepared” senior workshop

NASHUA – What are the facts…and what are the myths that surround how to be safe in an emergency? Should you stand in a doorway during an earthquake?  Should you tape your windows before a hurricane?  Should you open all of the windows in your home during a tornado?

Would you be surprised that the answer to each of these questions is “NO”? Do you want to learn more about the myths that have been perpetuated by movies and television shows over the past few decades?

Using popular disaster myths, the September Senior Education Workshop will provide participants with instructions on the correct safe protective actions they should take based on science and research on real disasters.

Justin Kates, emergency management director for the city of Nashua is scheduled to present the free workshop.

The free workshop is held at the Nashua Senior Activity Center and begins at 1:00pm.  The Center is located at 70 Temple St., Nashua.

The Senior Education Workshops are a program of Southern New Hampshire Services.

Advance registration for the workshop is requested. Please call Beth Todgham, Nashua community coordinator for Southern New Hampshire Services at (603) 889-3440 x 132 to register.

Workshop participants can come early to enjoy lunch offered by St. Joseph Community Services (Meals on Wheels) at the Senior Activity Center. A $2 donation is requested for diners age 60 and over; the price is slightly higher for those under 60. Pre-registration for lunch is required. Call Steve, SJCS site manager, at 882-2106 to reserve your lunch. Lunch is served at 11:45am.

The monthly workshops provide area residents with information on resources available in the community as they age. Past programs have been filmed by Nashua’ Education Channel and broadcast locally on Comcast Channel 99. They can be viewed on-line at http://nashua.ezstream.com.

ServiceLink Resource Center, the Nashua Public Library, and the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services-Bureau of Elderly and Adult Services provide additional support for the workshops.
