English for New Americans (ENA)

ESOL/English as a Second Language Classes for Adults!

We offer day and evening classes for English language instruction. Refugees, immigrants, and visitors from many countries come together to read, write, listen and speak the English language.

To enroll, students must fill out a registration form and take a language test. The results will determine student placement level.Summer registration is in August.  During the school year, registration dates are determined by availability in the classrooms.

  • Our classes offer practical English for living and working in the community, and conversing with friends and neighbors.
  • ENA also offers computer skills classes for students who are enrolled in ESL classes during class time.
  • Citizenship classes are offered in the Fall and Spring and are open to anyone needing help preparing for citizenship.
  • There are special events such as conversation cafes, holiday dinners, and afternoon teas where our students practice conversation with native English speakers.

Western Hillsborough County Family Services

Western Hillsborough County Family Services (WHCFS) responds to identified service gaps and barriers to the economic, physical, social and emotional well-being of low-income families in Hillsborough County. This is accomplished through a collaborative effort between Southern New Hampshire Services and other organizations and businesses in the Peterborough area. Services provided include access to food, rent assistance, parent education, education advocacy, drug and alcohol education, adult literacy, family support, custody information, assisting adults with preparation for the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET – formerly the GED) and a myriad of other social services.

WHCFS’ goal is to provide long-term services to help strengthen families and provide the tools for self-sufficiency. It has been an established program at the Riverview Housing Complex in Peterborough for 17 years. Based on the success of the program at Riverview, these services were added at Pine View Village

The Children’s Program component of WHCFS operates year-round, with academic assistance and various activities during the school year, and recreational program during the summer.

The summer program offers arts and crafts, sports, outdoor activities and field trips, which include camping, hiking local mountains, botanical parks, boating, swimming and a trip to the ocean. For children who often do not leave the confines of the housing projects within which they live and do not have the benefit of a family-type summer vacation, the field trips are a crucial part of the summer program and the children’s developmental process.

Community Assessment

Southern New Hampshire Services has completed a Community Assessment encompassing towns in Hillsborough and Rockingham Counties.  The data collection process included electronic surveys of community partners, focus groups with local providers and stakeholders, and surveys of SNHS program participants. The document is published here in hopes that the information contained in it will inform decisions made with regard to the identified needs of low-income individuals, and spark discussion among community partners leading to action in addressing them.
