The Fuel Assistance Program (FAP) has begun taking applications for the winter season that runs from December 1, 2016 to April 30, 2017.
An in-person interview is required of all applicants. All qualified households can now call to make an appointment to come to their local Southern New Hampshire Services office to apply.
Information on program qualifications and documentation needed to complete the application process will be provided when the appointment is scheduled.
Hillsborough County offices are open Monday through Friday in Manchester, Nashua and Peterborough. Offices in Milford and Hillsborough are open on scheduled days.
Rockingham County offices are located in Derry, Portsmouth, Raymond, Salem and Seabrook and are open Monday through Friday.
The program is expected to open on December 1, but the actual date is based on when federal funds are released. Applications for assistance will continue to be taken for anyone who wishes to apply for the program through its end in April, 2017.
Fuel assistance benefits are a grant and do not need to be repaid. The benefits are not meant to pay for the entire winter heating bill but rather are there to help the client get through the winter. Benefits range from $75 to $1125 per season.
The benefit amount is based on household income and annual heating costs.
Clients whose heat is included in the rent may have their benefit sent to the landlord as a rental payment on the client’s behalf if their rent is not subsidized.

NASHUA – What are the facts…and what are the myths that surround how to be safe in an emergency? Should you stand in a doorway during an earthquake? Should you tape your windows before a hurricane? Should you open all of the windows in your home during a tornado?
Would you be surprised that the answer to each of these questions is “NO”? Do you want to learn more about the myths that have been perpetuated by movies and television shows over the past few decades?
Using popular disaster myths, the September Senior Education Workshop will provide participants with instructions on the correct safe protective actions they should take based on science and research on real disasters.

NASHUA – As the top targets for con artists, older investors need tools and information to protect themselves and from threats against their hard-earned retirement savings.
This information will be provided at the “Don’t Be the Next Victim: Ways to Protect Your Nest Egg” Senior Education Workshop scheduled for Monday, August 8 at the Nashua Senior Activity Center.
Officials from the New Hampshire Bureau of Securities Regulation will provide attendees with the top ten self-defense tips specifically developed to help individuals and their families protect their retirement nest egg.
Workshop topics include services provided by the NH Securities Bureau, recent psychological studies on the tendencies of older investors; questions to ask and how to select/evaluation salespeople and the red flags that scam artists use to lure you into trouble.
As officials from the NH Bureau of Securities Regulation, the opinions and information they offer are unbiased. The presentation will include extensive free investor educational materials and time for questions.

NASHUA –Can you name all of your medications and why they were prescribed? Do you know how the medications help you...and what their possible side effects are? Do you take over-the-counter medications? Do you know how they interact with your prescriptions? Proper management of medications is critical.
Improper management can lead to the emergency room, hospital or even a nursing home.
How to properly manage the multiple medications you take is the subject of the July Senior Education Workshop, scheduled for July 11 at the Nashua Senior Activity Center.

Youth age 18 and under will enjoy free meals again this summer through the Summer Food Service Program coordinated by Southern New Hampshire Services.
Sites located in five cities or towns in Hillsborough and Rockingham Counties will provide free meals to local youth. All meals are prepared following USDA guidelines.
Breakfast, lunch and/or supper meals are available at the designated locations.
Any child under age 18 may come to eat. There is no registration and identification is not required.
The meals are provided at no charge and are the same for all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. Meals must be consumed on site.
Southern New Hampshire Services has been sponsoring the Summer Food Services Program for 14 years. SFSP helps to ensure that at-risk youth eat at least one nutritious meal each day when school lunch programs close for the summer. The program is vital to supporting mental and physical development so that children do not lose ground while out of school.
SFSP also employs local college age youth - many whom were SFSP participants in the past. The work experience teaches them valuable transferable employment skills and provides them with the opportunity to give back and stay connected to their community.

Southern New Hampshire Services has completed a Community Assessment encompassing towns in Hillsborough and Rockingham Counties. The data collection process included electronic surveys of community partners, focus groups with local providers and stakeholders, and surveys of SNHS program participants. The document is published here in hopes that the information contained in it will inform decisions made with regard to the identified needs of low-income individuals, and spark discussion among community partners leading to action in addressing them. GREENVILLE — Greenville Falls, a 70-unit affordable housing development for seniors on Main Street, was renamed on Friday in honor of its founder Ronald A. Philbrick.
“He was so instrumental in bringing this about we decided to have this renamed for him,” said former housing manager of the building Nancy Garland at a party with residents on Friday after the dedication.
At the party, Southern New Hampshire Services staff as well as residents of the building shared stories about Philbrick, his humor and dedication to the elderly. Philbrick’s family — including his widow, Jean Philbrick of Milford, his son Ron Philbrick Jr. of Weare and daughter Laurie Caruso of Greenland — also attended the dedication. READ MORE.

NASHUA – Continuing the live independently as you age requires keeping a close eye on the funds you’ve set aside for retirement and taking advantage of the many and varied benefits that are available to the more senior members of our community.
